How Regenerative Medicine Can Restore Sexual Health for Men and Women

Male and female sexual dysfunction often stem from the same issue: blood flow, nerves, hormones, and emotions must work together. When one falters, desire, arousal, or satisfaction can drop.
In men, erectile dysfunction (ED) [trouble getting or keeping an erection] usually arises from weakness of the blood-vessel lining that controls blood flow. This reduces nitric-oxide-driven vasodilation [widening of vessels to let in more blood] and venous trapping [ability to keep blood in the penis]. Diabetes, hypertension [high blood pressure], high cholesterol, pelvic surgery, or stress can all play a part.

In women, sexual response covers interest, arousal, orgasm, and comfort. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) [vaginal and urinary changes due to low oestrogen] is common. Low hormones thin and dry vulvovaginal tissues [skin and lining of the vaginal area], reduce elasticity, and alter vaginal pH [acid balance], causing dryness, sex-related pain, and low arousal. Pelvic injury, chronic illness, and certain medicines can worsen it.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) [a concentration of a person’s own platelets that release healing growth factors] is gaining attention. Injected PRP releases signals such as PDGF, VEGF, and TGF-β [proteins that stimulate new blood vessels and tissue repair]. In men, studies show it can improve erectile function with few side effects. In women, PRP may ease GSM symptoms, restoring lubrication and elasticity—especially useful where hormones aren’t an option.

Adult mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) [natural repair cells from bone marrow, fat, or umbilical tissue] also show promise. They act through chemical messages to nearby cells, releasing cell-signalling proteins and tiny bubbles carrying growth signals that encourage new blood vessel growth, reduce scarring, and calm nerve irritation. In men with vascular or post-surgery ED, early trials show better erections and sensitivity.

These therapies which are supported by science and early research aim to heal underlying tissue, not just mask symptoms. For many people, PRP and MSCs offer a hopeful next step.

Still, the basics matter most: healthy sleep, exercise, balanced blood sugar and pressure, and open communication with partners. PRP or MSCs work best when lifestyle, hormones, and emotional health are already supported.
